Nice feature. I hope Paul comes down from his asking price, finds a buyer, and soon, and his health improves. I hate to say it, but this collection has been passed over for years. There's little priceless or historically relevant in there. What he is sitting on are records that wouldn't sell from his store in the entire time it was open. The statement that since most of it isn't on CD, 83% of ...

Video: The World’s Largest Record Collection
Published 8/18/2008 by eskay at Nah Right
Cinematographer Sean Dunn just sent me a link to this clip he shot of Pittsburgh resident Paul Mawhinney, the owner of the world’s largest record collection. This is one of those things that has nothing to do with Hip-Hop, but at the same time has everything to do with Hip-Hop. I remember reading about Mawhinney a couple of months ago after his eBay sale of the collection fell through. It baffles the mind that in a country world with so many millionaires and billionaires, there isn’t one person that can give him the 3 ...

Published 8/19/2008 by synthhead at Synthtopia
This documentary tells the story of Paul Mawhinney and Record-Rama, the largest collection of vinyl LPs in the world. Mawhinney was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. Over the years he has amassed what has become the world’s largest record collection. Due to health issues and a struggling record industry Paul is being forced to sell his collection. A really interesting look at the historical value of vinyl, and the obsession of collectors. via Crate Kings

No buyers for world's largest music collection despite $47 million discount
Published 8/19/2008 at Prefix
So far the internet's reaction to the failure of Paul Mahwinney to sell his "world's largest record collection" has been along the lines of: "See, no one cares about analog media anymore." Me, I don't see it that way. First of all, his beginning asking price was $50 million. Are you kidding me? Even at the now "reasonable" asking price of $3 million, he's not getting any takers. You know why? Because for $3 million you can build an amazingly awesome record collection that you won't need a warehouse for and doesn't contain a whole lot of crap. [ Nah Right ...

The Archive of Paul Mawhinney
Published 8/20/2008 by Netzley at Puddlegum
Paul Mawhinney has the biggest record collection in the world at over three million albums. The amazing thing is nobody wants it. With plaguing health problems he’s trying to sell. It’s been appraised for 50 million dollars. He’s selling it for three million and can’t find a buyer. If anybody wants to give Chasing Lions three million dollars we’ll buy it. Watch the movie below to see the archive for yourself. ...

Short Doc: The Archive
Published 8/20/2008 by Jay C at The Documentary Blog
Thanks to Sean for bringing this cool documentary short to my attention. Director Sean Dunne gives takes a look at Paul Mawhinney’s 50 million dollar record collection which, unfortunately, is currently up for sale. (For much less than that estimate) Mawhinney shares his thoughts on cd’s versus vinyl while showing us some of his rarest pieces and travelling down memory lane. Dunne supplies some beautiful images in a nicely paced and somewhat morose snapshot of a man forced to give up something he loves. Check it out below. The Archive from ...

Documentary Short on The World’s Greatest Music Collection
Published 8/21/2008 at Row Three
Documentary Short on The World’s Greatest Music Collection Paul Mawhinney I first caught wind of Paul Mawhinney when his extensive record collection went up for sale on eBay earlier this year. Mawhinney has been collecting records for the better part of his life and over the decades, he has amassed The World’s Greatest Music Collection. Made up of 3 million records, 300,000 CDs and more than 6 million song titles, the collection has been on sale for months but Mawhinney, who is legally blind and ill, can no longer maintain the collection. Mawhinney is looking for an institution that can maintain the collection in tact since it ...

Paul Mawhinney - record collector

The Archive from Sean Dunne on Vimeo. I don't often do a straight repost of something I saw on Neatorama because I know there's an overlap in our audiences (not to mention writers) but I had to include this very cool short about the guy with the World's largest record collection. Go read about it on Neatorama. Leave a comment on this story. ...

Video: Fantastic short on the world’s largest record collection

What an incredible collection.  I mentioned this a while back after “Record Rama” closed their doors in February and I’m absolutely shocked that nobody has bought this collection.  Of all the DJ’s who claim they love the music and how loaded they are, they can’t spring for this collection? Where you at Dr. Dre? Pay particularly close attention to what Paul has to say about the age of digital music.  Shouts to double G
