anleyang Maybe if you don't like the fact that people are upset that China Cheated, you should take it up with them.
They got caught four years ago and obviously have not learned their lesson.
Cheating in the event has obvious ramifications and it is unfrotunate for those girls deprived of performing in the events that are from legitimate teams.
China is a disgrace abusing young girls to lie about their age and to cheat in the international games. Where else do they cheat?

Nonm Maybe if you're so upset (since you're convinced that they've cheated), you should do something about it. I'd like to see you prove it. And don't give me all the stuff like "oh, they'll cover up their tracks" or "oh, they'll use money to bribe people." When you obviously feel so strongly about something, I like to see you do something instead of just complaining.
And also, do you know anything about the Gymnastic system in China? Are you so brainwashed by the western media that you'll believe everything they say? Kids aren't "chosen" out of grade school and put into these courses by force. If there is any sort of force, it comes from the kids' parents who want to see them succeed. If you haven't noticed, a lot of gymnasts come from very poor areas of the country. Their parents want their kids to go to a place where they'll get enough to eat and someday, have a better life than themselves. So even if it's pushing, it's for all the right reasons. The government will not do anything if the parents aren't willing. There are A LOT of people in China and the government isn't that desperate to force the people. So before you say "abusing" and start criticizing, do some research (or at least visit some places in China) please.

anleyang Oh we take i tyou are the expert on Gymnastics now. How much more evidence to you need to prove to you they are cheating. Their own records clearly show it.
Do you deny that a girl 8 years ago announced on China State Television that she cheated and was in the Olympics at 14? I suppose China themselves lied about that.
That girl never saw the Olympics again. Parents have nothing to do with it in the Chinese society. The Chinese take the kids away from their parents at 6-8 years old if they show promise. The parents may see them once a year after that. Then, if the kids don't work out, they dump them.
Great system. I would call that child abuse with a capital C! And you did research? Where? So far you haven't quoted a single source? All you do is blather nonsense.

Nonm First, I'm certainly not an expert. I've never said that. But then, neither are you so I don't really feel that was a legitimate argument. And technically, to prove that someone is cheating, pass records is not enough. If we just look on past records, then we can arrest people who committed crimes in the past with no reason whatsoever. I mean, they've done it in the past, they must be guilty of the current crime. Evidence is what is need to convict someone of a crime, current evidence.
And I've never denied that the false age was not a possibility. I've even posted it in my first comment (if you bothered to read the whole thing). It's possible, I'm just saying we shouldn't jump to conclusions. Innocent until proven guilty, right? Or is the law different where you live?
And if you've bothered to read my second comment, the government takes the kids to a school where they are trained with permission from the parents. They do not do it by force. The parents who agree know what the kids are getting into. Besides, there are enough people in China that they don't have to do it by force. There are a lot of poor families who would love to send their children to a place where they would have enough to eat and later on, have a better future.
And yes, I haven't quoted any sources. But do you really think that Chinese people would bother to post this stuff on some website (it would be Chinese anyway if one existed). What's the use? They do not care that the western media blabbers away about all their faults. Why must they do this to prove themselves. Because in the end, words are but wind and seeing is believing.
On that note, I would like to point out that I lived 16 years in China as a citizen and really, it's not as bad as people think. These things I've come to know from friends who told friends who told other friends and slowly made their way to my grandmother's ears. And yes, I grew up in a very poor area of the country so I've seen dirt and grease. As a kid, I didn't have any of the fancy stuff there are now for kids. I played in yard, played hop-scotch on a grid I drew with a piece of chalk I found. And guess what? It was fun. The western media just exaggerates way to much on the negative side that people who's never travelled through China never sees the positive side.

anleyang For a non-expert, you sure blather a bunch.
You admit you have no sources, but you are commenting on an article that gave you plenty to back up their story. They have plenty more on their web site.
Now it comes out you are a kid. Aren't you supposed to be 18 in this room?
Glad you liked hop scotch. Not sure what it has to do with the price of tea in China.

Also, I'm kind of tired at this age cheating thing everyone's been talking about. How can you be sure that they're underage? Just by looking? By "some documents that turned up at SOME time?" I'm 19 already. I'm a little past 5 feet. I have a really round face. Most people think I'm much younger. When I go see movies, sometimes I have to show ID. Some of them can be naturally short. Of course the false age is a possibility. I'm not denying that. But the point is, would the Americans make such a big deal had the Chinese women not won Gold? Nastia's beam performance was a little stronger than Shawn Johnson's. She did an almost flawless routine with no balance checks and a stick landing. Did anyone make a fuss? No. Because an American got the gold and that's all that matters. My point is, some people are making a big fuss about this for all the wrong reasons. And in the end, all they appear to be, are very sore losers.
Now, consider the following possibility. What if they were actually of age. That this is indeed another rumour trying to darken the success of the Beijing 2008 Olympics. How do you think those girls would feel after practicing so hard and performing so well, to have people say that they do not deserve their medals because they were "possibly underage?" People, before criticizing and scrutinizing them. Please consider their feelings as well.
